In follow-up to his debut LP Unclosing Brock Tyler presents a new EP entitled You Can't Keep The Sun Down, a collection of songs that gives a much-anticipated glimpse into the current musical world of the Edmonton-based musician and songwriter; and the result is as rewarding as it is concise. With six songs clocking in at almost exactly fifteen minutes the material is to the point, yet never at the expense of the strong lyricism and tasteful musicianship for which Tyler is becoming known. And the numbers don't stop there: the album was recorded quickly over just a few nights with the songwriter estimating the total recording time at around twenty-four hours.
Recorded in the dead of night in a church just south of downtown Edmonton, the influence of the space upon the recording is obvious: piano, guitars, drums and trumpets resonate off the walls and wooden ceiling, allowing the listener to hear a moment of music bloom in the space where it was created. According to Tyler, “All the reverb you hear is just the church itself; nothing added later, just a few microphones standing around picking things up as I played.” Performing all the instruments himself (except for an appearance by friend Tim Batke, of Edmonton bands Faunts and duplekita) the process of recording this much material so quickly was no small feat, but one that Tyler deemed necessary:
“It was very important for me to record these songs quickly and simply. I'd spent the past few years recording a lot of material — at least a couple of albums worth — that eventually got shelved because of a lengthy, drawn-out recording process. Recording in a church helped, not only because of the unique ambiance, but also because it meant I had a limited amount of time to make it work. I knew placing those kinds of restrictions on the project was imperative if I ever wanted it to see the light of day.”
The heavy ambiance also serves as an important element of transition from the dense layering found on Unclosing to the more sparse, deliberate instrumentation featured on this EP. Where Unclosing filled the gaps with brass quartets, syncopated percussion, and layered voices, You Can't Keep The Sun Down allows the spaces to be washed over with a sense of depth that gives a natural ebb and flow to the dynamics of the songs, highlighting most significantly the strength of Tyler's voice which has developed into a full-bodied and confident instrument.
Tyler has toured his music across western and central Canada and has shared stages with Matt Epp, Faunts, The Provincial Archive, Colleen Brown, The Details, The WhitSundays, and others. His music has been featured on province-wide CKUA in Alberta and has received national airplay support on CBC radio one, two, and three. You Can't Keep The Sun Down is another sure step forward in his emergence as a songwriter and performer of note in the Canadian music scene.
